PinoyStop Video Pick: FRIGIDAIRE, KALESA, JEEPNEY, ATBP.

Teaching our “Kiwinized” kids about our roots can be challenging.  There is too much to teach and they have too little attention span.  However, in this age of video games and MTV, the internet is a powerful tool to keep them interested.

I recently stumbled upon a Gangnam Style Parody video (entitled Opo, Pinoy Style) by a Canadian-born Filipino, Mikey Bustos.  His take on the popular novelty song maybe intended to be humorous to its viewers but if you dissect it, you will find a buffet of Filipino icons, stereotypes and customs.  Even my young kids watched the whole video with interest.

For Filipinos migrants such as ourselves, thousands of miles away from what we used to call home, it feels good to be reminded of our roots every now and then.  Mikey’s video is both entertaining and educational.  It intensifies our sense of pride to be a Filipino in a foreign land.
