Today in Philippine History

Filipino Priests Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos and Jacinto Zamora (collectively known as GomBurZa) was executed at Bagumbayan in Manila by garrotte. They were found guilty of subversion arising from the Cavity mutiny of 1872. The Cavite mutiny (uprising by workers in Cavite Naval Yard) was used by the Spanish colonial authorities as a pretext to secure a guilty verdict.

The national hero, Jose Rizal, would later dedicate his novel El Filibusterismo to the priests memory.
