30 October, 1919

TODAY IN PHILIPPINE HISTORY:

Flag Day was declared by Governor-General Francis Burton Harrison following the passage of Act No. 2871 of the Philippine Legislature restoring the use of the Filipino Flag. For 12 years, from September 6, 1907 to 1919, the display of the Philippine Flag was banned in accordance with Act No. 1696 or the Flag Law “banning the display of Katipunan flags, banners, emblems, or devices and for other purposes.”

The bill repealing the Flag Law was approved and became Act No. 2871. Harrison likewise issued Proclamation No. 18 setting aside October 30, 1919 as a public holiday in the Philippines to be known as “Flag Day”. Since then, there have been other Flag Days such as May 28 and June 12.
