TODAY IN PHILIPPINE HISTORY

Ruy Lopez de Villalobos landed in Mindanao after setting sail from Navidad, Mexico. He named the country “Islas Filipinas,” in honor of King Charles’ son, Prince Philip.

He was able to establish settlements in Sarangani but needed to leave due to low food supply and hostility of the natives.
