TODAY IN PHILIPPINE HISTORY:

The Supreme Court reversed a 1993 lower court decision sentencing former First Lady Imelda Marcos to 12-year jail term, based on insufficiency of evidence. The court ruled 8-5, with one judge abstaining, to acquit the widow of former President Ferdinand Marcos.

Their son, Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., said his mother was elated. “People have berated her, people have ridiculed her, and in the end this decision has proven that she was right,” he said. The decision saved her from a 12-year jail term and overturning the only case in which she had been found guilty of graft during her late husband’s rule. She and her husband were accused of stealing billions of dollars during the latter’s presidency.
