Today in Philippine History

The “Prince of Tagalog Poets”, Francisco Baltazar y dela Cruz, died at age 73. Also known as Francisco Balagtas, he wrote Florante at Laura, regarded as one of Philippine’s literary masterpiece.

The Filipino extemporaneous debate “ Balagtasan” was named after him. Also, Francisco Balagtas Elementary School in Manila was erected in his honour. Apart from that, parks, plazas, and streets around the country were named after him.
