THE PHILIPPINE JEEPNEY

Did you know? The Jeepney is the most popular and most common means of public transportation in the Philippines.

The word “jeepney” comes from the words “jeep” – and “Jitney”, a North American English term for “vehicle for hire.” The original jeepneys were just altered and refurbished WWII Willys & Ford jeeps left by the Americans after the WWII – where engines and chassis were salvaged, metal roofs added, exterior re-decorated, and seats reconfigured to accommodate more passengers.

If you’re based in Wellington, New Zealand, you can find our very own Philippine jeepney on display at the Southward Car Museum in Paraparaumu.
