TODAY IN PHILIPPINE HISTORY

Maria Corazon “Cory” Sumulong Conjuanco Aquino was born in Manila. She later became the 11th President of the Philippines behind a popular uprising against the regime of the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos. She was revered by the Filipinos as an ‘Icon of Democracy’, and hailed by Time Magazine as “the saint of Democracy”.

She is the mother of the Philippines’ current president Noynoy Aquino and the wife of the assassinated Senator Benigno Aquino.

In 1992, she returned to private life after her term finished. She died on August 1, 2009 of colon cancer at the age of 76.
